Foods to Avoid When You Have Braces

Foods to Avoid When You Have Braces
Posted on 09/06/2018

Braces can be difficult when it comes to eating. They require you to be more conscious of what you are consuming in order to keep your treatment running smoothly. That’s why your trusted orthodontist, Dr. Lauren Cai and her professional team provide the following diet guidelines for our Woodland area patients with braces:

Sticky Foods

Chewy candies, gum, caramel, peanut butter, molasses, maple syrup, and others should all be avoided. Each of these foods will get stuck in between your brackets and wires, and make for a very difficult cleaning.

Hard Foods

Hard and crunchy foods such as popcorn, nuts, ice, raw vegetables like apples or carrots, and harder breads like pizza crust - can damage your braces with one bad bite, compromising your treatment. Stay away from any foods that require you to bite down hard.

Tough Meats

The toughness and force used to rip meats like beef jerky, well done steaks, and tough pork will loosen the wires and brackets of your braces when you try to take a bite. Stay away from these meats and go for softer ones like chicken, fish, or soft deli meats.

Use Common Sense

When it comes to caring for your braces, common sense is your best bet. If a food is questionable to you, stay away. Knowing the main textures to avoid - hard, sticky, and chewy - will help you to exercise your best judgement when determining what not to eat.

Eat These Instead!

Fortunately, there are many foods that are safe to eat with braces. These include eggs and most dairy products, cooked pastas and rice, fruits like peaches or berries, cooked vegetables, tender meats like chicken and seafood, soft deli meats, and soft breads such as muffins, pancakes, tortillas, and donuts.
