Since many of our patients are students, we have created a list of orthodontic tips to keep in mind when the business of the school year approaches.

Here are a few orthodontic reminders for when the school year approaches:

Prepare a Braces-Care Kit

In order to take the best care of your braces, it is important to stay prepared for any nuisance that may happen during the day. This kit can be in the form of a zippered pouch, and can be kept in your backpack, purse, or locker. In it, you can store all of your day-to-day and emergency braces supplies. For example, extra elastics, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental wax, and mouth guards are great to keep on-hand.

Pack (or buy) Braces-Friendly Lunches

Many chewy or crunchy foods can break or damage your braces. There are still many foods you can eat, though! The following sandwiches are great options if made with soft bread: Peanut butter and jelly, tuna, cheese, and meats that aren’t too chewy or rubbery. Pastas are great options, too! Some other great go-to’s are soups, salads, ground meat dishes, tofu, fish and smoothies. Great snacks include soft fruits, apple sauce, string cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, and cottage cheese.

The More Water The Merrier

Take a refillable water bottle to school with you so that you are able to easily drink from it throughout the day. Water will help rinse away particles of food that may get stuck in your braces, and will help neutralize the acids in your mouth throughout the day. Even tap water is a good option, as it contains fluoride, which will work to strengthen the enamel of your teeth.

Go The Extra Mile

You may also want to consider leaving any extra emergency supplies, such as a spare bag of elastics, with a teacher or principal. This way you have more options in case you lose or misplace your braces-care kit.
